Azerbaijan Grand Prix Baku Street circuit was undoubtedly a thrilling race. In the F1 history, Baku is the first circuit where Force India have scored 2 podiums. 

The practice for Formula 1 4th race starts on 27th April and the final race held on 29th April 2018. As the race starts, the teammate of Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas was on course to lead after Mercedes took advantage of the safety car to come forward Vettel’s Ferrari. Unfortunately, Sebastian Vettel came to the second place because of the restart. Even on the next lap, Bottas also suffered a puncture. The two rivals were completely out of the way and after looking set to finish third, Hamilton was given a victory.

How did Vettel lose the race?

When the German-led from the pole, after several first-lap crashes, the safety car was triggered. This created a 3 second lead on the first racing lap. After seeing this, Hamilton could not stay with Vettel and his hope triggered when he locked his wheels and went into Turn One on lap 22. This restricted him to get the new tyres and he placed third. Now the major battle was between Vettel and Bottas.

Both of them were stuck with a conventional strategy. They stopped on lap 28 to get the soft tyres. On the other hand, Mercedes left Bottas hoping for a safety car time. Because of Red Bulls, now Ricciardo cannoned into the Verstappen back and soon Bottas was leading the race.

When Bottas was about to win, he ran over the debris on a lap and suffered a major tyre failure. That was the time when Hamilton lead over Vettel

Practice 1 (27th April)

On this day, Max Verstappen got another setback after crushing the practice in Azerbaijan. His teammate Ricciardo proved that Red Bull will a major threat in Bako, especially when he trailed Mercedes pacesetter Bottas by less than 10 seconds. The practice race was lead by Hamilton and Ricciardo before Bottas was about to reach the bottom line.

Practice 2- (27th April)

Formula Practice 2 showed the real pace of Red Bull in Baku. The opening session seems that Daniel Ricciardo trail Bottas Mercedes narrowly, but Australian showed to be the pacesetter. However, Raikkonen was less than a 10th of a second. 

Practice 3- (28th April)

In Saturday’s final Azerbaijan practice, Sebastian Vettel had no problem to string a proper lap together. The 4 times world Champion easily lead the race. However, a late crash for Sergey Sirotkin of William’s cost competitors a few minutes running.  

Qualifying ( 28th April)

Sebastian Vettel captured the third position in a row. Although, Kimi Raikkonen took off the hopes of Ferrari of a front-row lockout after a mistake of the final run’s last sector. It was believed that Fin will steal the pole position, but he lined up in P6 because Hamilton came into second place. 

Race (29th April)

Sebastian Vettel marked his third win of the season on Sunday in Baku. Red Bulls, Ricciardo and Verstappen collided quite late. When the safety car deployed, things changed. The results of the race were quite astonishing as Hamilton stood first, Kimi Raikkonen stood second and Sergio Perez stood third. 

The rest positions were-

  • Fifth Position – Carlos Sainz
  • Sixth position- Charles Leclerc
  • Seventh Position- Fernando Alonso
  • Eighth Position- Lance Stroll
  • Ninth position-Stoffel Vandoorne
